Electric vehicles may be a good fit for your business fleet

More businesses are recognizing the value of electrifying their fleets. From large companies like Amazon and DHL to local companies in our service area, they want the cost savings and environmental benefits electric vehicles (EVs) offer.

BD Clean is one company leading this effort. The Madison-based commercial cleaner recently added three Nissan LEAFs® to its fleet. Employees working the day shift use the EVs to travel between the properties they clean. Each crew travels up to 40 miles per day.

Brandon D’Orazio, owner of BD Clean, plans to install two additional Level 2 charging stations.

“This works best for our operation as it allows us to charge the EVs at night, if needed,” explained Brandon D’Orazio, owner. “We currently charge once every two to three days depending on usage. Charging on-site is very efficient.”

BD Clean installed two JuiceBox Pro 32 Level 2 charging stations on-site and plans to install two additional stations in the future.

“We try to be green and take actions that help protect the environment. EVs definitely help us do that, “D’Orazio added. “EV fleet vehicles are a good business decision, but there is a learning curve that comes with anything new.”

For example, drivers should be aware of how to most efficiently operate an EV in winter. EVs are less efficient in cold weather, just like gasoline-powered vehicles. And driving range is reduced because cold batteries are less efficient.

“It’s a good idea to park EVs in a garage during winter and to preheat your car’s cabin while it is plugged in,” said Debbie Branson, MGE Manager Electrification. “MGE is available to help businesses learn the ins and outs of operating and maintaining EVs.”

New EV fleet rate

MGE can help determine if EVs are a good fit for your business and help you save on charging costs. Our new EV Fleet Rate program is designed for MGE electric customers with dedicated meters for EV charging.

Lower emissions are important, but so is the bottom line. EV fleets can fuel up with electricity for about half the cost of gasoline. Our EV Fleet Rate may help businesses save more by offering a discount on demand charges for four years. During this time, MGE can work with you to discuss how to grow your EV fleet and charge your EVs to maximize value.

EV fleet analysis

If you are interested in EVs for your business, consider scheduling an EV fleet analysis with MGE. We will look at how current gasoline vehicles are being used to determine if EVs would be a good fit for your company. We will provide a detailed report showing the cost to own and operate new EVs in comparison to your current vehicles. Contact your MGE account manager or call the Business Energy Line at 608-252-7007 for more details.

MGE to build EV fast charger hub in downtown Madison

Construction is underway on MGE’s EV fast charger hub along downtown Madison’s East Washington Avenue.

The hub will serve nearby businesses and residents, commuters, fleets, taxi and rideshare drivers, and others who need convenient charging on the go.

The hub will be one of the first of its kind in the state of Wisconsin. MGE will install high-speed chargers to serve eight stalls at the site located at the intersection of South Livingston Street and the 700 block of East Washington Avenue.
